The Decision Model for Data Professionals: An Enterprise Analysis Technique
Presented By Barbara von Halle
Decades ago, the Relational Model changed the way we perceive and manage data. Now, in 2010, the Decision Model is doing the same for business decisions and rules. Business analysts and business SMEs use it today to represent business logic and rules as a web of normalized Rule Families. For the first time, a business's logic is explicit with its own unique look-and-feel. Inconsistencies, gaps, and redundancies become obvious. This shift is having a profound effect on certain industries already.
The timing is intriguing because Decision Management itself is gaining momentum, according to Harvard Business Review (Tom Davenport, "Make Better Decisions," HBR, Nov 2009).

This presentation, specifically aimed at business analysts, is based on the recent book, The Decision Model: A Framework for Business Logic Linking Business and Technology (von Halle and Goldberg, 2009, Taylor & Francis LLC, ISBN 1420082817). "This book can become one of the classic books of a new era in computing that will have much traction in the next few years"- Opher Etzion, Ph.D., IBM Master Inventor. |
The attendee will:
- Learn that businesses run mostly on non-persistent data
- See how the Decision Model transcends and leverages available data
- Consider Decision Models and data models to instigate creative business thinking and decisions
- Recognize business decisions (business logic plus non-persistent data plus inferential relationships) comprise a new dimension and model
- Witness the inherent structure, integrity and normalization principles lie hidden in business logic today (as they were hidden in data years ago)
- Follow the step-by-step creation of a Decision Model using an agile iterative approach.
- Envision the integration of the Decision Model, visualization, and data models into requirements practices.
